About Me

I completed my PhD in History of Art at UCL in November 2023 with a thesis titled 'Mobilising Post-War Eco Art History Against the Climate Crisis'. In 2018, I graduated from the MA programme in the History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art with a Distinction grade, and I received my BA in the subject from UCL with First Class Honours and a place on the Dean's List (awarded to the top 5% of students for ‘outstanding academic performance’).

Tutor Experience

I have over five years' experience of teaching art history, which has spanned several full time and part time roles that I have held in three leading universities: The University of St Andrews, The University of Edinburgh, and UCL. During this time, I have taught people from a wide array of backgrounds in postgraduate, undergraduate, and widening participation courses. My pedagogical expertise is officially recognised by my status as an Associate Fellow of Advance HE.

Most recently, I was employed as an Associate Lecturer in Modern & Contemporary Art in the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews, which was ranked 2nd in the United Kingdom for the subject in the 2025 Complete University Guide. I am now tutoring on a freelance basis while developing my research. Although I am especially interested in the relationship between art and climate change, I am confident tutoring on any period or subject in art history and have experience of teaching on a wide range of modules including: 'Art History and Environmental Crisis', 'Approaches to Art History', 'The Cultures and Politics of Display', 'An Introduction to Modern and Contemporary Art', 'Art, Culture, and Politics, from 1900 to Now', 'Modernity, Empire, and Revolution: Art from 1789–1900', 'European Art and Architecture in the 17th and 18th Centuries', and 'Art in Europe and Beyond to 1600'.

My approach to teaching is flexible, as I design each class to align with the needs of the student. I am well-qualified to provide feedback on essays and dissertations. Likewise, I enjoy sharing my passions for art and teaching through online video lessons, in which can I discuss assignments and clarify topics that students are struggling with. I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate which is linked in the side panel of my profile.

Topic Expertise

I am qualified to teach art history at all levels: from A-level to postgraduate. Although I am especially interested in the relationship between art and climate change, I am confident tutoring on any period or subject in art history.

A wonderful tutor who goes above and beyond to provide detailed and considerate feedback. Edward has really helped me to develop my writing style over the last few months and has given me encouragement throughout the whole process. Went off topic a lot but it’s art history so unavoidable!

Testimonials

'Although I have not been tutored by Edward, I am convinced he would be excellent in this role. He is organised, calm, clear, balanced, sensible, professional, interested, interesting and passionate. He is helpful, dependable and a great communicator. As a tutor myself, I would strongly recommend Edward to those seeking tutoring services.'
— Hugh C

'Edward is a highly personable and supportive tutor who I've known for over 8 years, since my undergraduate degree. He has a diverse range of knowledge across many topics in art, philosophy, and literature. I'd say that one of his key strengths is making complex ideas easy to digest. Overall he is an inspiring teacher who is compassionate towards his students and works 'with' them rather than just 'teaching' them. I would recommend him if you need help on proofreading, essays, dissertations etc. in the field of art history, curation, museum studies and contemporary art.' — Cyrus H

'Edward has extensive experience as a professional Art History tutor and has unanimously received positive reviews for his classes. As a fellow art historian, I can testify to his ability in this role.' — Brittany J

Edward was a very encouraging tutor to my daughter who has ADHD and for
whom writing an undergraduate dissertation presents time management and
planning challenges. She enjoyed working with him and he used the time
effectively, proving very good value for money in the amount they achieved.
Edward is knowledgeable in his field and enthusiastic about history of art
as well as clearly very clever and experienced. We would highly recommend
him. — Anonymous (London mother)
